This is a supplied media release.

Moira Turley has been appointed Director of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (NZCIO) in Taipei, Wellington Chamber of Commerce announced today.

NZCIO is a subsidiary of the Wellington Chamber and promotes New Zealand’s trade, economic and cultural interests in Taiwan.

Chamber Chief Executive John Milford says, “Taiwan is New Zealand’s eighth largest export market. Since the agreement between New Zealand and the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu (ANZTEC) came into force in December 2013, there has been spectacular growth in trade, with New Zealand exports increasing by 34 per cent to $1.1 billion to August 2016.

“Close links have been forged between Taiwan and New Zealand, including a 59 per cent increase in Taiwanese visitors to New Zealand since ANZTEC came into force. The Taiwanese enjoy a visa-waiver programme, a popular working holiday scheme and daily same-plane flights.

“In addition, indigenous cooperation is an important strand of the New Zealand-Taiwan relationship. Maori and the indigenous peoples of Taiwan have been cooperating on language revitalisation, economic development and cultural exchange.

“The Wellington Chamber is keen to build on the positive results we have already seen from ANZTEC, and further strengthen economic and cultural links with Taiwan. Ms Turley is well qualified to achieve this, and brings an impressive skill set from her time working in South East Asia and the Middle East.”

Ms Turley will join the staff of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She is currently Unit Manager of the South East Asia Division at the Ministry and has served as Deputy Head of Mission in Ankara and Manila. She will take up her position in early 2017, succeeding Si’alei van Toor.
