Sales of new cars have taken off with 13,030 registered last month – the highest number in June on record.
It is the fifth strongest month of all time for sales of new vehicles.
The highest single month was in July 1984 with 13,983 vehicles registered.
The market year-to-date is 6% up (3435 vehicles) on this time last year.
Toyota remains the overall market leader for June with 23% (2942 vehicles) followed by Holden with 11% (1373 vehicles) and Ford with 10% (1277 vehicles). Those marques also remain at the top of the list in the year-to-date.
New passenger car registrations of 9021 vehicles in June were up 504 units on June 2014 sales of 8517 vehicles. Toyota remains the market leader for passenger vehicles at 24%, followed by Holden 10 percent, and Hyundai 9%.
Motor Industry Association chief executive David Crawford says the sales of new vehicles remains strong despite other economic indicators showing the economy may be flattening out.
“If the current rate of sales continues we could see new vehicle registrations break the 130,000 barrier for the first time,” Mr Crawford says.
