NBR reporters Hamish McNicol, Chelsea Armitage, Nick Grant, Nathan Smith and Jason Walls throw around some of the week’s most dramatic, outrageous and “tantalising” stories.

The Rumble participants take the opportunity to dive into the flag debate and this week’s inclusion of ‘Red Peak’ on the November ballot after what’s been reported as a groundswell of support for the design.

Despite its apparent popularity on social media, however, there’s a good chance the fifth alternative will be shut out as a result of the flag referendum’s preferential voting system.

As there are already three fern designs – or four, if you accept Nick Grant’s insistence that the koru is just a baby fern – voters who pick one of the fern designs as their first preference will presumably highly rank the other similar designs on the ballot, leaving the deck stacked against Red Peak.

“Evil” drug CEO
Is an increase in the price of a lifesaving drug for capital gain just an example of “late-period capitalism,” or a massive ethical red flag?

That’s the million dollar question… or, in this case, the $750 question after US-based Turing Pharmaceuticals chief executive Martin Shkreli increased the prices of an HIV-treating drug by 5500% this week.

The Rumble discusses this decision and how Mr Shkreli hastily dropped the price back down after pressure on social media.

The Rugby World cup – “who gives a ruck?”
Speaking of social media, although there are many who are tantalised by the World Cup, there are others who are finding the constant media and social media attention for the sporting event overbearing.

Even more grating is the seemingly endless number of companies using the All Blacks brand to promote their products.

Despite this, there are still those who find new ways to make the once-in-every-four-year event exciting.

Sadly for some, the TAB’s One Punt at a Million competition finished almost before it had even begun after Japan’s shock victory over South African this week.
