The first NBR Rich List was published at the end of 1986 in the middle of a sharemarket boom. It contained just 55 individuals and 12 families, many of whom are still there.
Nevil Gibson talks about this and other milestones in Rich List history, including one man who insisted he was wealthy enough to be on it but should never have been.
High-tech entrepreneurs stormed on to the Rich List in in the early 2000s while several Kiwi billionaires, including some who made their fortunes overseas, overtook the Todd family, which had topped the Rich List for its first two decades.
