While recording an NBR Weekend Rumble at the end of July, regular guest panellist Lance Wiggs expressed a desire to talk about Moa Group’s just-held AGM and its annual results but was denied due to lack of time.
Instead, a week later a special Weekend Rumble was recorded during which Mr Wiggs and assorted NBR staff members talked about the company’s performance while also sampling and commenting on its beer. Suffice to say, the general tenor of the discussion wasn’t especially complimentary.
In response, Moa chief executive Geoff Ross offered to come to NBR Towers for Rumble rematch, during which he would seek to disabuse Mr Wiggs and co of a number of misconceptions he believed they held, while Moa’s actual founder – craft beer enthusiast Josh Scott – would attempt to educate the panel’s apparently underdeveloped palates.
Mr Ross’ sporting offer was duly accepted, with Mr Wiggs, Calida Smylie, Tim Hunter, Hamish McNicol and Nick Grant begrudgingly taking the opportunity to drink more free beer. This is the result.
Post-recording, Mr Ross wanted to clarify his answer to a question about why gross margin is the same as the freight and logistics cost. He says: “What we are seeing is three key trends. Sales are going up, which contributes to increasing gross margin dollars. Gross margin as a percentage of sales is increasing, as we see the impact of new cost of goods. And then freight and logistics relative to sales is going down, as we see improvement in freight effaces, moving from lots of smaller direct to store deliveries, to fewer larger deliveries to DCs [direct customers].
"So the relationship between freight and logistics and gross margin will change in coming years, as we get the benefits from scale.”
In addition, prompted by some interesting comments he made after the recording was finished, Mr Ross accepted an offer for a further interview, resulting in an insightful article in this week’s print edition.
