Financial markets largely shrugged off last weekend’s onslaught that killed at least 129 civilians and wounded hundreds more,

But a leading global economist visiting Auckland warns there could be some long-lasting effects

Chicago-based Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist at global asset manager Northern Trust, says the longer-term issue is Europe’s ageing demographics and where its economies will recruit their future workforces.

“The lasting impact of Paris will be in migration,” he told NBR Radio’s Andrew Patterson.

Europe desperately needs more and younger workers but cultural assimilation from Northern Africa, South Asia and the Middle East hasn’t gone well in some countries.

Mr Tannenbaum says the terrorist attacks will galvanise anti-immigrant forces that will keep people out when these countries need more population.

The exclusive interview also covers dodgy economics statistics on China’s growth; diverging monetary policies among central banks; and predicts when the US Federal Reserve will start to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade.
