National has lost its election night majority of 61 seats in a 121-seat Parliament (see table below).
The party lost 1 seat and the Greens picked up one as the Electoral Commission announced the final result this afternoon. It will now need UnitedFuture (1 seat), ACT (1) or Maori Party (2) support to pass laws.
The final tally included the counting of 330,985 special votes, and recounts in close electoral races.
National has traditionally lost around 1% on specials, while left wing parties have gained (which helps explain why John Key reached out to ACT, UnitedFuture and the Maori Party despite his party's election night majority).
And that was the case for 2014, with National's election night share of the vote, 48.08%, falling to 47.04% — a fraction behind its 2011 total.
The Greens gained from 10.02% to 10.70%, increasing their list 13 to 14 in the process.
Labour gained from 24.69% to sneak over the psychologically important one quarter mark with 25.13%.
List MP Andrew Little, who was first-drop and waiting to see if his seat was safe, immediately talked up a leadership bid.
