Brewer Moa wants to introduce a new spokes-celeb to endorse its beer as it makes inroads into the US market.
But Moa's latest investor outlook statements, which reveal a plan to use Prime Minister John Key as a face for the brand, has already run foul of Mr Key's office.
Without his consent, Mr Key is set to feature in the company’s new marketing material for a beer garden planned in San Francisco’s Pier 29 during the America’s Cup.
Moa’s “Bar of arrrr” is to be pirate-themed and along with the PM, sheep and the Queen will also adorn the walls.
In what might be seen as just another publicity stunt, Moa chief executive Geoff Ross told NBR ONLINE the pirate-themed restaurant – which has not yet been built – will have a nautical theme and have staff dressed in pirate outfits.
He says specifics are yet to be finalised, but he is comfortable using Mr Key’s image.
“Politicians are fair game. I think they’re OK to use and John would see the fun in it.”
Mr Key's press secretary Lesley Hamilton says the prime minister has no knowledge of his image being used overseas advertising for Moa Beer and did not authorise it.
“The Cabinet Manual prohibits the use of the PM’s image to promote or endorse any commercial product or service and we will be seeking advice on this alleged instance from the Cabinet Office.”
“Occasionally, the prime minister’s photograph is used without his knowledge and, if necessary, we will ask for it to be withdrawn.”
While Mr Key's office may huff and puff about his hijacking, unauthorised piracy of the monarch's image usually carries a more terminal penalty.
