"The prognosis is very good and Mike is looking forward to resuming his duties as soon as possible.”
Mr Moore has been New Zealand’s top diplomat in the US since 2010.
Before that he was director-general of the World Trade Organisation from 1999-2002 and has held posts on many international organisations.
He was trade minister in the fourth Labour government from 1984-90 and was briefly prime minister leading into the 1990 election.
He was leader of the opposition from 1990-93, when he lost the leadership to Helen Clark.
