Microsoft and NZ company Revera have announced "Homeland Collaboration" a new service that combines Revera's "private cloud" and Microsoft's "public cloud" technologies
Revera general manager Robin Cockayne (son of managing director and largest shareholder Roger Cockayne) said Homeland Collaboration is geared to organisations seeking a "sovereign-safe" cloud computing environment.
Microsoft runs data centres for its "Azure" cloud computing service in various parts of the world, but not New Zealand. Local customers are served by a Microsoft data centre in Singapore.
The issue of data sovereignty was brought into focus by an IRD notice highlighted that NZ customers of Xero's onlinie accounting service (hosted by a US cloud computing provider) are technically in breach of a law that requires copies of financial records to be kept locally.
As well as giving Microsoft an "in" with organisations worried about data being stored off-shore under a cloud (internet-based) computing model, the company also gets a better angle on government business.
Late last year, an all-of-government procurement tender saw Datacom and Revera win places on a panel to supply infrastructure-as-a-service or "cloud computing" services across the state sector.
