A collection of paintings by war artist Peter McIntyre has sold at auction in Auckland, some for prices well above expectations.
Dunedin-born Mr McIntyre was the official New Zealand war artist during World War II and painted many battle scenes featuring New Zealand soldiers.
After the war he was one of the artists at the forefront of a move away from traditional New Zealand artwork and was known for his work featuring New Zealand landscapes and farm work.
Last night all 10 of the McIntyre paintings offered at the International Art Centre’s auction sold, bringing a total of $308,000, well above the estimates of $250,000 for all 10 paintings.
One of the paintings, King Country Musterer, sold for $59,700. It had been estimated to bring up to $40,000. Another, Ready for the Drive, sold for $26,900, well above its upper estimate of $15,000.
The paintings, all landscapes or farming scenes were from a private Bay of Plenty collection put together over the last 50 years by a collector who knew McIntyre and who bought some of the paintings from him before he died in 1995 aged 85.
