The New Zealand sharemarket may have outperformed relative to some of the larger developed markets, but it’s still not completely immune to what’s going on.
Sam Trethewey of Milford Asset Management tells NBR Radio’s Andrew Patterson there are three reasons global markets are falling.
Firstly, financial stocks have come under pressure as people become more nervous around the potential for writedowns, and secondly, Sovereign wealth funds that were set up by the oil nations have also fallen.
“That rainy day has arrived and now they are pulling their money out of the markets to fund their budget deficits from their oil price declining.”
And thirdly, the moves by the US Federal Reserve to pull back on quantitative easing and then lifting interest rates as well.
