Details of the bail application are restricted, Justice Ronald Young said in his decision after submissions lasting some 45 minutes from counsel for both the Crown and Lundy that he was satisfied Lundy represented no threat of reoffending.
He ordered Mr Lundy to report to a police station once a week and to have no contact with witnesses who gave evidence at his original 2002 trial for the murder of his wife Christine, and seven year-old daughter, Amber, in August 2000, at the family home in Palmerston North.
The location of Mr Lundy's bail address, and the location of the police station he must report to are suppressed.
Mr Lundy had appealed his original conviction to the Privy Council in London, which this week ordered a retrial.
Justice Young placed no other restrictions on Mr Lundy’s movements, such as preventing his travelling to Palmerston North, but asked all parties to the retrial not to make comment to the news media until it was concluded.
Mr Lundy was represented by Wellington lawyer Felix Geiringer, and the Crown by Ben Vanderkolk, appearing by closed circuit television from Palmerston North. Mr Lundy did not appear in court.
A date has yet to be set for the retrial.
