An electronic mailer from a bus company that mocked Len Brown has been deemed satricial and therefore not in breach of ad standards.

According to a recent Advertising Standards Authority decision, an email ad for The Naked Bus referred to the Auckland mayor’s extramarital affair and the subsequent inquiry into his spending.

It stated: “Unless you’re Len Brown, you’ll probably agree that using our new mobile website to book cheap fares is a more useful [and appropriate]) use for your mobile phone…”

Complainant J Bond said it was poor taste to make reference to Bevan Chuang and the mayor’s affair.

However ASA chairman Jenny Robson said it was humorous and satirical.

She said it was saved by the provision for humour under the code and did not reach the threshold where it was reasonably likely to cause serious or widespread ridicule, hostility or offence.

The complaint was dismissed.
