The Christmas movie season has produced mixed box office results for Hollywood studios.

As expected, Star Wars: The Last Jedi from Disney continues to rule over returns, collecting an estimated $US100.7 million over the four-day weekend in the US and Canada.

New Zealand returns for the weekend are not yet available but the latest blockbuster instalment in the Luke Skywalker saga collected $3.1 million in its first week.

This compares with $6.9 million for Thor: Ragnarok, which has clicked with Kiwi audiences, largely due to director Taika Waiititi’s distinctive self-deprecatory treatment. He also plays the stone monster with a typically Kiwi accent.

Meanwhile, Last Jedi has grossed more than $US775 million world-wide so far.

Among other releases, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Sony) continues to do well, grossing $US67 million in North America alone, while Pitch Perfect 3 (Universal, NZ release date: January 1) debuted at $US25.6 million.

Less successful was adult-oriented musical The Greatest Showman (20th Century Fox), which fell flat with audiences; takings were just $US18.6 million in the US and Canada. However, audiences gave it an “A” rating and this may mean it will be able make up some lost ground on word of mouth.
