Grant Robertson is the loser and Shane Jones surprisingly strong in a 3 News poll of 500.
The poll, released this evening, found overall the popular standings of the three Labour leadership contenders were:
David Cunliffe: 39.6%
Shane Jones: 31.6%
Grant Robertson: 28.8%
Among Labour voters, the standings were:
David Cunliffe: 45.6%
Shane Jones: 28.1%
Grant Robertson: 26.4%
A new, "full membership vote" system will see the leadership decided by a mix of caucus (40%), party members (40%) and affiliated unions (20%) votes.
Mr Robertson is regarded by most pundits as holding a narrow edge with caucus, while Mr Cunliffe likely has the edge with unions.
A preference system will see votes for Shane Jones redistributed between Mr Cunliffe and Mr Robertson should he place third - a situation that makes his endorsement possibly crucial in the determination of the race.
The winner will be named on September 15.
