Restaurant Brands reported a 3.7% rise in second quarter sales from a year earlier, to $100.4 million, with same store sales up 3.9%.

Sustained growth continued for the KFC brand during the 16 weeks to September 13, Starbucks Coffee returned to same store sales growth, but Pizza Hut sales were still slightly down on last year, the company said today.

Year-to-date sales of $176.3m were up 3.9% on a year earlier and 4.9% on a same store basis.

At KFC second quarter revenue was up $4.6m or 6.7% to $72.8m, with same store sales up 5.9%.

An ongoing transformation programme, consistency in store operations, wider menu options and a more focused approach to marketing, all helped maintain sales momentum at KFC, Restaurant Brands said.

Total sales figures were affected with six large stores being closed for between two and 11 weeks for transformation. A new KFC store opened in July at Gate Pa in Tauranga, taking store numbers to 87.

Sales in Canterbury had been affected in the week following the September 4 earthquake, but most stores in the region had recovered well. Only the KFC store in the Christchurch CBD was closed for any length of time after the quake.

Year to date sales at KFC were $127.1m, nearly $9m more than the previous year, an increase of 7.5% in total sales and 7.9% on a same store basis.

Total sales for Pizza Hut in the second quarter were down 3.8% on the year before to $19.1m, and down 2% on a same store sales basis.

Year to date total Pizza Hut sales were down 4.6% to $33.8m, with store numbers down four to 88. Same store sales at Pizza Hut were down 2.9% year to date, showing an improving trend from the first quarter's same store sales decline of 4.1%, Restaurant Brands said.

Pizza Hut was initially affected by the Canterbury earthquake but sales recovered strongly in the following weeks.

Starbucks Coffee returned to same store sales growth in the second quarter after declining same store sales for the previous five quarters. Store numbers slipped one to 39.

Same store sales were up 2.4% for the quarter and 0.5% year to date. Total quarterly sales were down 3.1% from a year earlier to $8.6m, with three fewer stores.

The growth in same store sales at Starbucks in the second quarter was due to ongoing work focusing on operations and improving the product and value. Year to date sales were $15.5m, down 3.8% on the year before.

The four Starbucks Coffee stores in Christchurch were closed on the day of the earthquake. They reopened within the week and while sales continued to be adversely affected they were beginning to build back as central Christchurch recovered from the quake.
