Prime Minister John Key and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnball have announced a limited relaxation in Australian immigration rules that will make it easier for some Kiwis to become citizens of “the lucky country.”
Under the deal, which the leaders jointly announced in Sydney today, New Zealanders who were shut out following Australia tightening its immigration rules in 2001 will be eventually be able to apply for permanent residence and then citizenship if they’ve earned $A53,000 ($NZ57,000) or more for five consecutive years since 2001.
Mr Key has said that up to a third of the 305,000 Kiwis who have moved to Australia since 2001 could meet that criteria.
