Key shrugs off poll that shows 69% against flag change

John Key is shrugging off a poll that says most New Zealanders don't want a new flag, saying the survey question was too simplistic.

A 3 News-Reid Research poll of 1000 voters has found 69% of those surveyed want to keep the current flag, now that they have seen the final four alternative designs.

Some 25% supported change; 6% didn't know.

Questioned about the result on the Paul Henry programme this morning, the prime minister said it did not reflect the true number of people still open to a flag change.

"It's, with the greatest respect, not a terribly sophisticated question. It's a yes or no question but within all of those numbers there will be some people who will say they will never change and others who say they'll never change but if ... you press them, they might change," he says.

A UMR poll of 1000 people between August 25 to 31 found 52% in favour of changing the flag.
