Key, National steady in first post-ponytail poll

PLUS: Winston Peters doubles support.

Wed, 29 Apr 2015

John Key and National are steady in the first post-ponytail poll – a result that may make opposition parties reassess plans to hammer the PM over the controversy when he returns to Parliament.

A Herald Digipoll taken half before the news broke and half after shows:

  • John Key's preferred prime minister rating at 64.6% (falling from 65.0% in December)
  • Andrew Little at 13.9% (+0.3%)
  • Winston Peters at 12.0% (+6.1%)

Mr Peters' bounce in personal support on the back of the Northland byelection was the poll's only major turn up.

In party support it found:

  • National 51.0% (+0.6%)
  • Labour 28.7% (-0.2%)
  • Green 10.8% (+1.3%)
  • NZ First 6.1% (+0.5%)
  • Maori 0.8% (-0.7%)
  • United Future 0.0% (NC)
  • ACT 0.8% (+0.4%)
  • Mana/Internet 0.0% (NC)
  • Conservative 1.1% (-1.7%)

The random phone poll had a sample of 750, and was conducted between April 17 and April 26.
