John Campbell to call historic AB match for Sky

Match commentary gig likely to be a one-off for the rugby fanatic.

Weeks of speculation about what broadcast journalist John Campbell will do next have finally been answered – temporarily at least.

Mr Campbell severed ties with TV3, where he worked for 24 years, when the management of parent company MediaWorks decided to axe his eponymous current affairs show after a very public, controversial review of the programme.

Today it was announced the campaigning journalist and rugby fanatic will be a commentator for Sky Sport’s coverage of the July 8 match between the All Blacks and Samoa.

The game, to take place in Apia, will be the first time New Zealand’s premier rugby team has played in Samoa.

Mr Campbell’s participation is widely seen as acknowledgement of his and Campbell Live’s campaign to encourage the All Blacks to play their inaugural fixture in the rugby-mad Pacific nation.

It’s unlikely this is more than a one-off gig for Mr Campbell, however.

Asked whether his commentary role is the precursor of a relationship with Sky, a spokeswoman for the subscription television company said that “John Campbell is making a couple of ‘panel’ appearances in our rugby coverage before the test match but that is all that is planned.”

Mr Campbell retweeted Sky’s Twitter announcement with his trademark exclamation of enthusiasm: “Marvellous.”
