Advertised job vacancies are up 30% nationwide on last year. This is according to an analysis of more than 40,000 jobs listed on Trade Me Jobs between July and September.

South Island job vacancies have risen 63% on the same quarter in 2010, while North Island job vacanies rose by 23%.

Trade Me Jobs head Pete Ashby said the job ad increase had been especially noticeable in the construction, trades & services, transport & logistics, and engineering sectors.

South Island growth has been led by Canterbury. Driven by the post-earthquake rebuilding effort, there was a 73% increase in advertised jobs compared to a year ago, fuelled by high demand from employers in the construction, engineering, trades and transport sectors.

The Rugby World Cup has prompted an increase in demand for hospitality & tourism roles, as well as part-time work generally. Mr Ashby said this demand would reduce during the post-World Cup wind-down.

“We also expect the upcoming elections to stymie public sector hiring, especially in the Wellington market.”

Sector increases since last year

Farming – up 77%

Trades and services – up 54%

Hospitality – up 33%

Tourism – up 44%

Part-time roles – up 20%

Customer service – up 59%
