James Murdoch has resigned as executive chairman of News Corporation.
In a statement the company said the move was to focus Mr Murdoch, the youngest son of patriarch Rupert Murdoch, on the company's television business.
The resignation comes as the firm struggles with the ever-deepening fallout from the phone hacking scandal that has seen a number of executives arrested and the News of the World newspaper closed.
Reports indicate News Corp shareholders are drafting resolutions to kick James Murdoch off the company's board at its AGM.
