Japanese cars have proved to be popular among thieves, as the AA Insurance list of the top 10 most stolen cars in New Zealand are all Japanese.

The Honda Torneo has raced ahead to the top spot for the fourth consecutive year.

AA Insurance customer relations manager Amelia Macandrew says although the probability of the Honda Torneos being stolen is far higher than any other car AA Insurance insures, there are no more of them on the road than any other vehicle.

The top 10 list is based on AA insurance’s data:

  1. Honda Torneo
  2. Mazda Familia
  3. Subaru Impreza
  4. Mitsubishi Libero
  5. Nissan Safari
  6. Honda Integra
  7. Subaru Forester
  8. Nissan Stagea
  9. Mazda Atenza
  10. Mazda Premacy

The data reveals 92% of theft claims for models in the top 10 list were for cars manufactured more than 10 years ago, with the average value of a stolen vehicle claim from the top 10 list is $5120.

“Thieves will always go for the easiest, fastest option,” Ms Macandrew says.

Despite vehicle theft remaining a concern, the figures have been relatively consistent over the past three years.

NZ Police crime statistics say there were 49,121 motor vehicle thefts and related offences in 2014, compared with 48,375 in 2013 and 49,935 in 2012.

Ms Macandrew says to prevent theft, simple actions are most effective, such as locking the car, even when it’s at home or parked in the garage.

“While it’s up to you to take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and security of your car, if you’ve mistakenly forgotten to lock it, you’ll generally still be covered by your insurance.”
