In the handset market, Huawei is best known for low-cost smartphones that have helped popularise Google's Android mobile software.

Now, the Chinese company is looking to move up the food chain with a range of high-end Android phones.

Among the first is the Ascend D, previewed today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Huawei's New Zealand operation told NBR should see the Ascend during the third quarter.

The Ascend D stands out from a crowded smartphone pack by dint of featuring a quad-core processor (based on "a proprietary Huawei design"), implying more power than the dual-core chips that feature in rivals' top-end handsets.

And as is the vogue these days with more expensive Androids, the Ascend has a big, big screen - 4.5-inches.

The operating system is Android 4.0. The display supports 720p HD. The rear camera is 8 megapixels, the front facing camera 1.3 megapixels.

The handset is 64mm wide and 8.9mm deep in a 1.2GHz version and 10.9mm thick in a 1.5GHz "XL" version.

Leaks indicate Samsung's Galaxy S3 will also feature a quad-core processor.
