New Zealand hotel prices up and Asian prices fall.
Hotel room rates across the country rose 5% last year.
The latest hotel price index from hotels.com shows Kiwis paid on average $146 a night for a hotel room, up from $139 a night in 2013.
Queenstown was the most expensive, rising 16% or $26 a night to an average room rate of $186, while Dunedin rates were up 11% to $145 from $131 and a night’s hotel accommodation in Auckland rose 6% to $144 a night.
Kiwis got more value from travelling to Asia where hotel room rates dropped on average almost 10% across the continent. Prices in Bali slumped 24% while Bangkok hotel room rates dropped 14%.
New York, the city that never sleeps, lived up to its reputation, with New Zealanders paying $338 on average a night to put their head down for a few hours. It is the most expensive city for New Zealanders to stay in.
Rising hotel room rates came off the back of a 5.4% increase in tourist numbers to New Zealand, which in turn pushed occupancy rates up. This growth is expected to continue for the rest of the year.
