A two-bedroom lakeside Kinloch home overlooking Lake Taupo has the distinction of once having been owned by former prime minister and governor-general Sir Keith Holyoake.
“Kiwi Keith’s” stentorian and occasionally pompous vowels dominated the political stage as New Zealand’s prime minister – briefly in 1957, and then between 1960-1972, in what still stands as one of the longest terms ever held in the post. He was also governor-general from 1977-1980, dying three years later at age 79, reportedly saying the Kinloch house was his proudest achievement.
His political career began when he first stood for Parliament in 1932. He is the only person to have been both prime minister and governor-general.
