Fresh from a $200,000 refit at Lyttelton Port, the MV Tuhoe was accidentally sailed on to sand at the shallow entry to the Waimakariri two days ago.
Crew were returning it to its berth at Kaiapoi.
For many years the 96-year old ship has been looked after by volunteers under the auspices of the MV Tuhoe Kaiapoi Riverton Trust.
After it became stuck, the structure was twisted at the stern by waves and surveyors have written it off.
Parts of the boat are now being deconstructed, and nearly all pollutants removed.
