Russell McVeagh partner appointed High Court judge.
Russell McVeagh partner Christian Nathaniel Whata has been appointed a High Court judge to sit in Christchurch from March 1.
Graduating in 1992, Mr Whata worked at Simpson Grierson and Kensington Swan before attending Cambridge University, where he achieved a first class master of laws degree.
A specialist in Maori issues, litigation, public law, energy, environmental law and resource management, Russell McVeagh appointed him a partner in 2001.
Mr Whata was co-author of chapters on Maori issues and environmental litigation in Nolan Environmental Law, is a former president of the Auckland Maori lawyers association (Te Runanga Roia o Tamaki Makaurau) and a former member of the St Stephen’s and Queen Victoria schools trust board.
Christchurch civil barrister and former Lane Neave partner, John Gordon Matthews was appointed an associate judge of the High Court to also sit in Christchurch.
