Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has been shortlisted to head a $5 billion global aid fund in Geneva, according to reports.
The New York Times reports Ms Clark is on the list with three other finalists from a list of nine to become the next director of the Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Ms Clark lost her bid to become the next secretary-general of the UN last year and will end her second four-year term with the UN’s Development Programme in April.
Others on the list include Subhanu Saxena – former chief executive of major Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla – and former Nigerian health minister Muhammad Ali Pate.
The fund has been struggling to raise money in the past. It had hoped to raise $10 billion in funding a year from donors but received just under $5 billion last year.
The US is reportedly the Global Fund’s top funder.
The Times reports that global health officials are worried that the backgrounds of the candidates could push the Trump administration away from historical commitments to the fund.
Mr Pate, for example, has tweeted that “Donald Trump has more in common with ISIS than America.”
