Headland
Waiheke Island
January 28 – February 20
This coming summer Waiheke Island will again be mounting the biannual “headland” exhibition of outdoor sculptures. In 2009 the exhibition consisted of 26 works. Next year there will be over forty works on the sculptural walk from Matiatia and around the headland.
There will be works by artists who have regularly exhibited such as Phil Price and Jeff Thomson as well as work from two international artists; Marcel Grosse from Germany and Marcus Tatton, a New Zealander now resident in Tasmania.
There has been an attempt to choose works appropriate for the site, how they fit into the landscape and what visual and physical connection and interactions they have with the environment.
Placing the works within the dramatic coastal scenery of Waiheke Island creates a unique opportunity for the public to experience the artist's response to the landscape with creative and innovative works.
There will also be significant awards recognizing both artists and sculptures. These include the “headland” 2011 Premier Award valued at $30,000 plus two Selectors Merit awards worth $5,000 each.
James McCarthy, one of the selectors of the exhibition says the show is “a freight train of artistic opportunity both for the artist and the visitor. Set in a beautiful location you will engage with a dynamic site specificity, large crowds and the forces of nature. This year we will focus on artistic excellence and chose those works that engage with the site and contemporary practice in exciting and rigorous ways."
