As first reported by NBR on April 21, the government is setting up a National Cyber Security Centre to help protect its agencies from hackers - although few details were revealed today.
Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce said today it was part of a new strategy to improve protection for everyone from cyber threats.
"Criminal elements are increasingly using the internet to gain access to personal information, steal intellectual property from businesses, undermine critical services and gain knowledge of sensitive government-held information for financial or other malicious purposes," he said.
"New Zealand's Cyber Security Strategy is the Government's strategic response to the growing cyber threat."
Mr Joyce said the strategy would involve targeted initiatives aimed at improving cyber security for individuals, businesses, critical national infrastructure and the Government.
He said the Government would work with businesses to help them deal with evolving cyber threats.
