Google's Australia and New Zealand managing director, Karim Temsamani, is leaving his role to head up the search giant's global mobile sales team.

Mr Temsamani's new role will be based in the US.

The former Fairfax magazine executive took the reins of Google's local operation, based in Sydney, three years ago.

Growth has been strong under his tenure, with The Sydney Morning Herald reporting this morning that revenue is set to hit $A1 billion by this time next year.

The company has yet to choose a successor, but a spokeswoman told The Australian that it was likely to be an internal hire.

"There's no doubt that the future of the internet is mobile," Mr Temsamani told the paper.

Google has recently enjoyed considerable success with its Android smartphone operating system, which by some market surveys is now out-selling Apple's iPhone and RIM's BlackBerry in the US.
