As expected, sci-fi blockbuster Avatar cleaned up at the 67th Golden Globe awards, taking the prizes for best drama and best director.
This positions the James Cameron 3D spectacular for other big wins at the Academy Awards.
Avatar is not only the most expensive movie ever made – more than $US400 million including marketing costs – it is also poised to become the highest-grossing global release ever.
Global takings so far exceed $US1.6 billion but the buzz in Hollywood was that it had not endeared itself as an Oscar winner.
That has changed as the Golden Globes, chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, as the awards are often populist and give a strong pointer to the film community’s Oscar voting, which ends this week.
Bachelor party disaster The Hangover was named best comedy or musical while Sandra Bullock, who was nominated for roles in both a comedy and in a drama, won the best actress drama award as a football fanatic in The Blind Side.
Jeff Briges won the best actor award in a drama for Crazy Heart, a story of a down-and-out country music singer.
Meryl Streep was chosen best actress in a comedy or musical for her depiction of chef Julia Child in Julie and Julia, beating herself in another nomination for her depiction of a divorcée in It's Complicated.
Robert Downey Jr, who played the title role in Sherlock Holmes, won best actor in a comedy or musical.
