Phil Goff's replacement as Labour Party leader will not be known until December 13.
Speaking to reporters this afternoon after a Labour caucus meeting, Mr Goff confirmed that he and his deputy Annette King had resigned their leadership positions.
However, both would be staying in Parliament.
Those to throw their hats into the ring for one or other of their leadership positions were David Cunliffe, David Parker, David Shearer, Grant Robertson and Nanaia Mahuta, Mr Goff said.
He did not rule out others also contesting the leadership, which would be decided by secret ballot at the December 13 Labour caucus meeting.

Whoever was elected as the new leadership team would have their full support, Mr Goff said.
Mr Goff's resignation follows Saturday's general election which saw Labour plummet in popularity to record its lowest vote since the 1920s.
