Rumours of MediaWorks lining up Duncan Garner and poaching TVNZ’s Heather du Plessis-Allan for a new current affairs show have turned out to be true.
The new show, Story, will screen on TV3 at 7pm, replacing the hole left by Campbell Live. It will also simulcast on RadioLIVE.
Mr Garner will continue to host his afternoon weekday RadioLIVE show Drive from 3pm to 6pm.
MediaWorks says the show will be “smart, fun and thought-provoking.”
“Story will focus on the issues that are relevant and important to all New Zealanders. We will be looking for the best stories, the most interesting stories and the stories New Zealanders are talking about,” MediaWorks group head of news Mark Jennings says.
Mr Garner says, “And when those in power in Wellington, or in your own community, make bad decisions, mislead you or are hypocrites, I promise – you can rely on us to keep them honest – simple. I have known Heather for a long time and she is a very talented reporter and broadcaster ... worryingly, we have [a] similar sense of humour!"
Meanwhile, Ms du Plessis-Allan says she is excited to be part of TV3's "new chapter."
Perhaps taking a dig at TV One’s Seven Sharp, she quips, "Duncan is one of the best journalists around, so I’m stoked to be able to learn from him. But Duncan, if you’re reading this; don’t let it go to your head. I’m not your sidekick. In fact, they told me, you’re my sidekick.”
The two journalists got the stamp of approval from media commentators on Monday.
