A south Auckland lawyer is seeking the Labour nomination to stand as the party's candidate in the Manurewa electorate his former boss is vacating.
Ian Dunwoodie said today he was contesting the Manurewa nomination after long-serving MP George Hawkins announced he would step down.
Mr Dunwoodie is vice-chairman of the Manurewa Labour Party and was a Parliamentary adviser to Mr Hawkins under the Helen Clark government.
Mr Hawkins was elected to the Manurewa Local Board in local body elections at the weekend.
He intends to quit Parliament at the end of this term, and has not ruled out quitting sooner, meaning there could be a by-election in Manurewa.
