Those Southlanders sure have unique ideas about romance, not to mention an enterprising spirit.
Council-owned company Venture Southland is auctioning off a night of passion in its 121-year old water tower, with breakfast delivered by none other than his dancing self, mayor Tim Shadbolt.
“Invercargill is offering hardy lovers from the South a chance to bid on a once in a lifetime opportunity with a romantic night for two in Invercargill's historic Water Tower,” the Trade Me listing for the auction said.
“The lack of big city lights and high-rise buildings means that lovers have an unimpeded view of the stars.”
All proceeds go to the NZ Cancer Society.
The tower is 130 feet high and has 112 steps, and the lucky lovers will be sleeping on a luxury airbed provided by E Hayes & Sons which will be kitted out in fine linen from H&J Smith Ltd.
The winning lovers will also get a pamper session from Beauty and Beyond, and can nibble on a dinner hamper provided by Ascot Park Hotel. The breakfast hamper, also provided by the hotel, will be hand-delivered by Mr Shadbolt.
There are a few rules before bidding, however.
Once in the tower, the night of passion can’t include any bubbly as council regulations restrict alcohol from being consumed on the premises.
Bidders must be aged at least 20 years, there shall be no smoking (not even on the balcony outside), and the overnight stay must be taken by the end of March.
“I'm two people short of a threesome at the moment, bad luck really since it's Valentines day and all...” one Trade Me auction viewer commented on Sunday. “Anyway, should I win what's the chances of getting some company in a town like Invervegas?”
“It's good to have a party-plan, but this party is restricted to 2 people – sorry,” Venture Southland replied.
At press time, the top bid was $815.
The auction closes on Friday at noon.
