Fonterra says it will review the judge's written decision before making any further decisions.
Fonterra will be sentenced on August 3 after being found guilty over the stench it caused by discharging three million litres of buttermilk waste into the wastewater plant of the southern Taranaki town of Eltham in October 2013.
It is understood that the South Taranaki District Council was fined $115,000 after it was found guilty of a comparable charge over its role in the incident.
It is also understood that Fonterra has paid more than $500,000 in assisting the council clean up the waste caused by the dumping.
According to a Fonterra spokesman, “Fonterra takes its responsibilities under the Resource Management Act very seriously and we do everything possible to ensure we meet best practice.
“The judge’s decision was made a short time ago and we are awaiting the written decision. We will review that before making any further decisions.”
