Fonterra has bought an Indian pharmaceutical company as part of a joint venture with Dutch company Royal FrieslandCampina.
It will extend Fonterra’s dominance as the leading supplier of lactose excipients.
DMV-Fonterra Excipients (DFE) has reached an agreement to acquire ingredient manufacturer Brahmar Cellulose Private Limited (BCPL), based in Cuddalore, India.
BCPL manufactures ingredients used by the pharmaceutical industry to make tablets and pills.
DFE accounts for about 50% of global sales of lactose excipients and 5 to 10% of oral tablet excipients.
The acquisition will help reduce supply chain and formulation costs, Fonterra said.
