International Art Centre
Fine Art Auction
July 28th
The latest auction of paintings at the International Art Centre showed that the market is relatively stable for 19th and early 20th century paintings. Works of high quality or of a special nature sold well while less substantial works failed to reach their lower reserve prices.
As usual, there was a major Goldie in the auction which attracted much interest. It was a portrait of “Kapi Kapi,” one of Goldie's favourite sitters. The work, which was expected to sell for around $160,000, eventually reached $195,000.
Among the other higher priced works was a George Baker 1856 watercolour of Wellington showing the Lambton Quay area. This sold for $45,000 ($30,000). There was also an Alfred Sharpe view of Shoal Bay in Auckland, which went for $24,000 ($20,000)
A small (165mm x 290mm) Charles Blomfield painting “Auckland from Mt Eden” went for $10,000 ($5000), while a slightly large view of “Takapuna Beach” went for $4500 ($4500).
An early survey map of the entrance to Auckland Harbour published by the Great Britain Hydrographic Office in 1857 sold well over the reserve at $5300 ($1500).
An early 20th century watercolour by Margaret Stoddard of “Franz Josef Glacier” went for $25,000 ($9000) while a delightful watercolour Beach Picnic by Maud Sherwood, went $6000 ($3000).
A John Weeks painting, “Limestone Gorge – King Country” which is similar to one of the same name in the Auckland Art Gallery collection, sold for $25,000 ($25,000).
The few contemporary works did well with a small Peter Siddell architectural study “Purple Glass” going for $5000 ($2500) while Dick Frizzell’s “Old Water Tower – Tokaroa” went for $16,000 ($8000)
