A day after his company's IPO (for which he wore his trademark hoodie as he remotely rang the Nasdaq's bell), Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has finally put on a suit.

Previously, his most formal public attire was a sports jacket and dress jeans, donned for a meeting with US President Barack Obama.

The occasion was not a visit to his underwriting banks - who took a bit of a hammering yesterday - but his wedding (Sunday NZ time) to long-time girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

Mr Zuckerberg (28) and Ms Chan (27) have been a couple for nearly a decade since they met at Harvard (leading to the Facebook CEO's irritation at his portrayal as a lovelorn geek in the hit 2010 movie The Social Network).

According to reports, the news came as a shock to around 100 guests, who thought they had been invited to Mr Zuckerberg's Palo Alto, Silicon Valley, home for a party to celebrate Chan's graduation from medical school.

Mr Zuckerberg gave Ms Chan "a simple ruby ring" and "home style food and sushi" was served.

On Facebook, both changed their status to Married.

Mr Zuckerberg controls 56% of Facebook's voting stock, and is the largest single holder with 503 million shares - putting his wealth around $US19.2 billion following Friday's IPO.
