Newspaper publisher says the settlement with NBR Rich Lister is substantial.
Fairfax Media has settled its defamation case with NBR Rich Lister Stephen Jennings and published a second apology on its website.
The case involved articles published in March 2015 on stuff.co.nz and a number of regional Fairfax newspapers, written by former senior Fairfax journalist Michael Field about Mr Jennings’ business affairs in Kenya and Russia.
The newspaper publisher issued a retraction and apology for the article in that same month.
In its second apology, Fairfax’s management, editors and Mr Field apologised to Mr Jennings, saying the statements in the article were “entirely without merit.”
The journalist did not contact Mr Jennings and Fairfax said the article failed to meet its high editorial standards and journalistic ethics.
The settlement amount is confidential but substantial, Fairfax says, and Mr Jennings has confirmed he will donate the net settlement to charities focused on his home province of Taranaki and sub-Saharan Africa, where he and his businesses are based.
