Radio NZ's board has named Paul Thompson as the state broadcaster's next CEO and editor-in-chief.

According to Radio NZ's 2012 Annual Report, "the Chief Executive's remuneration is in the $340,000 to $349,000 range."

Mr Thompson is a former editor of the Christchurch Press and the current group executive editor for Fairfax Media NZ.

He will replace Australian Peter Cavanagh, who will step down when his contract expires at the end of the year. Mr Cavanagh has headed RNZ for the past decade.

The Fairfax man is the second major RNZ executive appointment in recent times following journalist turned political spin doctor and PR man Richard Griffin taking over as chairman in mid 2011.

Mr Thompson has been the public face of Fairfax Media through a number of editorial controversies, from the naming of terror suspects to the Andrea Vance-Peter Dunne email exchange.

Beyond his executive editorial role, he has occasionally kept his hand in as a writer at Fairfax, most recently penning a slashing attack on Gareth Morgan's apparently intrusive on-field presence with The Phoenix. Some saw it as a metaphor for management getting in people's way in any field.
