Facebook is verifying official pages for local businesses for the first time, starting in US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand before expanding globally in the coming months.
Verified Pages of local businesses, which for now is limited to businesses with a physical address, will have a publicly visible grey badge on their page, the company says.
Facebook says its verification programme gives businesses a way to show that their page is the authentic representation of their business on Facebook and to give people a signal that they've found and are interacting with the authentic page.
This does not impact the existing criteria and experience for brands, celebrities, public figures, sports teams, media and entertainment that have a blue verification badge.
“We are expanding our Verified Pages programme to include local businesses for the first time. Now, local businesses in New Zealand can add a badge to their page that lets people know they're visiting that business's official Facebook presence. We plan to extend Verified Pages for local businesses to more countries soon," says Facebook Pages product marketing manager Kirsten Bury.
Facebook had no immediate comment on a separate development: an Australian report that it is eliminating local support for e-commerce pages that generate less than $50,000 a month.
