A surgeon’s luxury Herne Bay home has sold for a record $24 million.

It’s believed Auckland property investor Ben Cook has bought the Sentinel Point mansion, complete with helicopter pad, from endoscopic surgeon John Dunn and his wife Rosie.

It is the second-highest price paid for a house in New Zealand following last year’s $39 million sale of Mark Hotchin’s Paritai Drive mansion to businessman Deyi Shi.

Mr Dunn and his wife bought the site in 2007 for $8.1 million, thought to be a record for a section at the time and it has a July 2014 rateable value of $16 million.

The Dunns built a three-level grey minimalist house designed by Fearon Hay architects, featuring art and a central courtyard. It stands on a part of the point once dubbed the Herne Bay sultanate after the Sultan of Brunei bought houses in the area.

The site housed an abandoned concrete shell for decades. It was to have been a grand house but, before it was demolished, Mr Dunn invited graffiti artists to make their mark on the property.

Mr Dunn’s brothers are Patrick Dunn, the Catholic Bishop of Auckland and Martin Dunn, the founder of City Sales, a company specialising in apartment sales.

New owner Mr Cook is the founder of a privately held group of companies that owns a substantial number of CBD properties. He is also a director of mail order supplements business Nature Bee with his father Jeff.

His core business is described as long-term commercial property investment and his portfolio includes some of Auckland’s prime industrial, CBD office and retail properties.

Mr Cook adds value to the portfolio through active management and has allowed it to grow organically.

It’s believed he has a portfolio of commercial properties on the market about to be sold.
