Edendale expansion ‘on track’

Fonterra’s expansion project at the world’s largest dairy processing site at Edendale, Southland, is on track, southern operations manager Richard Gray says.
The first of the three new plants will be commissioned in early August, in time for the start of the new dairy season.
The project includes a new MPC (milk protein concentrate) plant, a reverse osmosis plant and an AMF (anhydrous milk fat) plant.
When the new plants are added to the existing operation, it will increase processing capacity by 1.4 million litres per day and lift cream processing capacity to 550,000 litres per day.
The expansion project, which started last September, is to cater for the continuing milk production growth across the South Island and it would increase processing capacity to a total of 16 million litres per day.
This would be broadly similar to the total daily average milk production in Ireland from March to September.
About 1500 dairy farmers supply milk to Fonterra’s Edendale and Stirling processing plants.
