There are several small theatre companies creating original new work in New Zealand. But one that stands out is Auckland’s Red Leap Theatre, which began a brief North Island tour of ”Dust Pilgrim” in Hamilton this week.

After receiving international acclaim for The Arrival, which was one of the stand-out performances in the 2009 Auckland Arts Festival, and following that with Paper Sky, Red Leap returns with a reiteration of a work that premiered in 2015 and confirms the company as a major feature in New Zealand’s theatrical landscape.

Dust Pilgrim is group-devised physical theatre that effortlessly melds, merges and flows like visual liquid from image to image while it takes audiences on an imaginative and epic journey.  Using the metaphor of constantly shifting sands it effortlessly links movement, mime and ephemeral suggestion to illustrate a young woman’s fight for freedom in a world where dreams and premonitions are as real as the wind.

But it has a dark side too, venturing into a world inhabited by tricksters, prophets, boundaries and borders ... although things are never as they seem.

Working with director Julie Nolan who co-directed the original with Grace Parker, an outstanding cast of three highly skilled theatre-makers bring this enchanting tale to life: Alison Bruce (The Almighty Johnsons, Calendar Girls), Ella Becroft (CoverbandPower Rangers MegaforceTe Po) and Tom Eason (The Wholehearted).

Dust Pilgrim explores the magic of theatre with some stunning theatrical wizardry that includes sound composition and design by Thomas Press.  If you have an interest in leading edge new work, Dust Pilgrim is certainly worth a look.

Dust Pilgrim tours to Hamilton (Playhouse, University of Waikato June 23, 24), New Plymouth (TSB Theatre, July 1) and Wellington (Te Whaea, July 6-9).
