Dr Allan Freeth, who currently serves as the chief executive of the Environmental Protection Authority, has been appointed to chair the board of the disruptive online accounting business Beany.
Building a career around innovation and disruption, Dr Freeth has served in a number of major organisations and is well known across New Zealand’s business, cultural and public sectors.
Dr Freeth’s previous roles include seven years as chief executive of TelstraClear Limited and five years as managing director of Wrightson Limited. Prior to that, he held senior management roles in Wrightson Rural and at Trust Bank New Zealand Limited.
“From a customer service point of view, I bring a lot of experience, and from a technology standpoint I understand implementing innovative business models,” said Dr Freeth.
Dr Freeth said Beany founder Sue de Beivre’s entrepreneurial spirit was admirable, with industries nationwide ripe for innovation, disruption and new ideas.
“You’ve seen this in the taxi industry with Uber, and a general shift in business models to focus on giving customers what they want at a decent price,” said Dr Freeth.
“It’s about giving customers the flexibility and control they need, and these opportunities are just sitting there – waiting. What customers want is simple, they want to get on with their business.
“Whether they be a gym owner, an IT contractor, graphic designer, or a plumber, they don’t want to be spending their time doing accounts. But they are looking for solutions that match their business values – high customer service, low costs, efficiency and no muck ups.”
Dr Freeth accepted the role this year, bringing a wealth of experience to the position.
