Emirates is stepping up its New Zealand presence by adding a third Airbus A380 superjumbo to its transTasman services.

An A380 will start flying from Brisbane to Auckland in October, replacing a twin-engined Boeing 777-300ER operation.

A380s already fly daily to Melbourne and Sydney from Auckland.

Emirates says Auckland will be the first airport outside the Dubai hub to have three scheduled A380 aircraft on the ground at same time.

Each flight arrives around midday and departs later in the afternoon.

The aircraft upgrade through Brisbane will add a further 135 seats in each direction each day.

The Emirates A380s can carry 489 passengers – 14 in first-class suites and 76 in business class on the upper deck; and 399 in economy on the lower deck.

Emirates says the Auckland-Brisbane-Dubai route is running at 98% capacity and is popular with both business and leisure travellers.

Earlier this week, Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee approved the extension of the Emirates-Qantas to transTasman sectors.
